The brightest-painted house in the village was Nila's. Nila is an Artist, but she had a big Hesitation to use bright colours—it wasn't just a hesitation, it was a Fear.
The emotions would be sharp and poignant. She knew, as a good artist, she couldn't Give Life to her paintings.
Nila, what sky are you drawing today? Mahesh Thatha asked. He was sitting in a dusty corner with his old film camera. His photos were famous for having Living Colour.
Nila replied, “Every day, it's the same sky, Thatha. Grey colour.”
Grandpa smiled softly. “Nila, I know why you've had this habit since your first painting.”
நிலாவின் முதல் ஓவியம், she drew it when she was five. It was a painting of a Rainbow (வானவில்) in the rain. The very next day after drawing it, Nila's Mom, whose life was as bright as those colours, was lost in an unexpected accident.
That rainbow took Mom away, Thatha. Happy colours will disappear one day. I am afraid of that,” Nila's voice was full of pain.
Mahesh Thatha slowly stood up. He held Nila's hand and led her to the Back Room. That room was Thatha's old Darkroom.
In the middle of the room, there was an old, rusty iron box. Inside, there were lots of old Photo Negatives. The negatives looked like a reverse, black-and-white world.
I told you not to open this box when you were young, Thatha said. “But today, it is time to show you."
“Look at this negative. This is not a World of Colours. This is a Hidden World—a world where all emotions, happiness and sorrow, are frozen."
Thatha placed the negative in a liquid. In a few moments, Colours slowly began to spread on that blank film. It was an old photograph of Nila's Mom, Dad, and Thatha laughing and playing on the beach.
Nila, look at this. Your Mom is in this picture. This Happy Moment is not gone forever. It was just hidden in this black and white form, that’s all.
Sorrow is like a negative. It hides all emotions and turns the world grey. But, the Happy Moments hidden inside are everlasting. We must try to Bring Them Back. Losing the colours is not in your hands, but bringing them back is in your talent.
Nila stared closely at the photo. Her Mom’s smile, her Dad’s playfulness... all of it was Safe within the colours she feared, behind the black and white. A great Burden lifted from her heart.
She turned and hugged her Thatha. "Today, I will draw a sky, Thatha... a Real Colourful Sky," she said.
Nila went to her studio. She took the canvas. But this time, her hands were not Trembling with Fear, instead, they were Thumping with Joy. She bravely chose a Bright Yellow colour, scooped it from the palette, and drew a Big Circle in the middle. It was a bright Sun.
Then, using Blue, Green, Red, and Purple, she took all the colours and painted a beautiful, Joyful Sky around the sun.
The painting was finished. That canvas broke the darkness that had covered it for so long and spread a Colourful Light.
Mahesh Thatha smiled looking at the painting. "Tell me now, Nila, what sky did you draw today?"
Nila smiled with teary eyes. "This is The One Day Sky, Thatha. The sky where Sorrow's negatives were hidden, but Happiness lives forever."
Colours may fade, but Happiness never dies
